Nagarhole National Park or Rajiv Gandhi national park is located in the Kodagu district of Karnataka. Nagarhole National Park is one of those parks in India which is open throughout the year. The park is filled with waterfalls, hills, valleys, streams and forests. The park is famous for its rich population of animals and birds.

Naga means snake and hole means streams. Many wriggling streams are found in this park and, thus the name. The park has 47 streams, 41 artificial tanks, four lakes with water throughout the year, 4 perennial streams, a reservoir and a dam.  Nagarhole national park has the highest density of herbivores in Asia. This park is best for spotting elephants, guar, tiger, black panther, and bear.

Main trees found in this park are silver oak, sandalwood, teak, crocodile bark, Indian kino tree, axle wood, kadam, cotton tree, ficus, beechwood, Indian gooseberry and others. Top conspicuous tree species are clumping bamboo, flame of the forest and golden shower tree.

Top animals to spot here are Bengal tiger, leopard, black panther, sloth bear, ussuri dhole, antelope, barking beer, sambar deer and elephant.

Nagarhole national park is famous for birdwatching too. More than 250 species of birds are found here. Nagarhole National Park, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1Arrive Bangalore (by flight)

On arrival at Bangalore International Airport, you will be greeted by our representative who will transfer you to the hotel, explain and hand over all the travel-related documents, and further assist you in check-in at the hotel. Overnight stay at the hotel in Bangalore.

Day 2Bangalore – Nagarhole (Flight + 270 Kms, 6.5-hour drive)

After breakfast drive to Nagarhole National Park. On arrival check into the Kabini River Lodge. After lunch goes for afternoon shared jeep safari /Jungle Activities to the national park.

Day 3 to 6In Nagarhole

All meals, morning and afternoon jeep safari/activities. Overnight at Kabini River Lodge.

Nagarhole National Park (also known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park), is a national park located in Kodagu district and Mysore district in Karnataka, India. It is one of India’s premier Tiger Reserves along with the adjoining Bandipur Tiger Reserve. This park was declared the thirty sevenths Project Tiger, Tiger reserves of India in 1999. It is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The Western Ghats Nilgiri sub-cluster of 6,000 km2 (2,300 sq. mi), including all of Nagarhole National Park, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site.
The park has rich forest cover, small streams, hills, valleys, and waterfalls. The park has a healthy predator-prey ratio, with many tigers, Gaur, elephants, Indian leopards, and deer (Chital, Sambar, etc.)

The park protects the wildlife of Karnataka. The important predators and carnivores in Nagarhole National Park are the Bengal tiger, Indian leopard, Ussuri dhole (Cuon alpinus Alpinus), sloth bear, and the striped hyena (Hyaena hyaena). The herbivores are chital, sambar deer, barking deer, four-horned antelope (Tetracercus quadricornis), gaur (Bos gaurus), wild boar (Sus scrofa), and Indian elephant. Nagarhole National Park provides an opportunity to see some of the southern population of gaur (jungle bison). Also, this park in Karnataka is a good place to see elephants in the luxuriant forests and bamboo thickets which they most enjoy. Their total population in southern India is now about 6500, nearly all living in the area where Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala adjoin in the shadow of the Western Ghats.

Other mammals include the gray langur (Presbytes entellus), bonnet macaque (Macaca radiata), jungle cat, slender loris (Loris tadigradus), leopard cat (Felis bengalensis), civet (Viverricula indica and Paradoxurus Hermaphroditus), mongoose (Herpestes Fuscus and Herpestes Vitticollis), European otter (Lutra lutra), Indian giant flying squirrel (Petaurista petaurista), Indian giant squirrel (Ratufa indica), porcupine, golden jackal, chevrotain (Tragulus meminna), hare and pangolin (Manis crassicaudata). Over 250 species of birds are found at Nagarhole National Park. Besides the enormous variety of woodland birds, there are large congregations of waterfowl in the Kabini river. Birds range from blue-bearded bee-eater, scarlet minivet, and Malabar whistling thrush to the more common ospreys, herons and ducks. Overnight at Kabini River Lodge.

Day 7Nagarhole – Bangalore – Fly back (by surface 270 Kms, 6.5-hour drive)

Morning safari/Jungle activity in the park, return to the lodge, check out, and drive to Bangalore to board a flight back home via New Delhi.
